What is the difference between "Advanced Forum" and the regular Vanilla forum

Can any of you advanced Drupalers explain the key differences? I'm sure stability is one.

The key difference that I've noticed is theming. It's a lot easier to make advanced forums look less Drupaly. The advanced forum module also makes it easy to write small modules that add content to the user profile in a forum post.
